Below are a few tips you can use with your kids to create consistency, build a foundation for routine, and help kids practice managing time. Doing a little of everything adds up at the end of the day. These simple steps can help kids create habits they will carry on for a lifetime.
- Waking up early.
Waking up early can take off the stress and pressure of worrying about being late to school. Getting up early sets time aside for planning the day, eating a healthy breakfast, and getting to school on time and avoiding traffic. It sets the tone for the rest of the day, and sets you up for a successful day. We recommend waking up 2 hours before school. - Making the bed.
Making the bed every morning before they leave for school. It’s as simple as throwing the comforter over your bed and straightening up the pillows. It takes 5-7 minutes to do and you’ll be happy to come back home to a nice made bed. If you hadn’t done much in your day, at least you made your bed! It’ll make you feel like you checked one thing off your to-do list! - 30-minute workout
A quick workout can help you stay focused throughout the day. The workout can be anything from a quick 30-minute jog, to a home FIT Potato challenge workout, to 30 minutes for practicing mindfulness with Yoga and stretching. The point of these 30 minutes is to take time to care for yourself before the Hussle and bustle of the busy day ahead. Kids also have times of stress and it’s good to learn how to practice mindfulness now so that they can carry these habits on for the future. The 30-minute workout routine is recommended as a minimum of time of exercise per day. This is on top of the sports and conditioning practice kids already partake in. We are focused on creating healthy habits for kids. - Read
Reading a book of your choice. Besides school work which is already planned in your day it’s important to pick up a book that your kids will like for their supplemental studying. Like a subject they are interested in that isn’t particularly in their school curriculum or a fun fictional book. Reading is great for expanding kid’s vocabulary and opening up their imagination. It also keeps the screen time down. Stop by the gym to participate in The FIT Potato Kids Book Sharing Club - Sleep
Yes, you hear it all the time get more sleep. We all know it’s important but ignore it all the time because there’s always so much to do. If your child sticks to a routine this will be much easier to accomplish, but it takes the parents to help to also aid in making this happen. Limit the amount of screen time. Once dinner is done, what’s next? Help clean-up, homework done, lunch ready for tomorrow? The last thing you want your child doing is being on the computer, phone, or tablet. They need this time before bed to wind down, take a bath, read, and lay out their clothes for the next day of success!
